EFSA recommends the Prionics®-Check PrioSTRIP SR for listing in EC directive for TSE testing
Earlier detection of TSE in sheep with the new Prionics®-Check PrioSTRIP SR.
The Prionics®-Check PrioSTRIP SR has fulfilled all requirements of the EU evaluation and is now considered suitable for approval as rapid test for detection of TSE in small ruminants’ central nervous system. The test represents a new generation of TSE tests designed to efficiently detect subclinically infected animals early in the incubation period. The results of the EU evaluation are described in the recent EFSA Opinion, published Mai 8, 2012.
The evaluation is the result of the fourth call of interest for rapid tests for TSE in small ruminants that was issued by the European Commission in October 2007. The PrioSTRIP® SR was extensively tested in a laboratory evaluation and a field trial. The test has passed all criteria set by the EU for the evaluation.
Superior detection of preclinical scrapie
The Prionics®-CHECK PrioSTRIP SR detected reference samples of classical and atypical scrapie in sheep and goats as well as BSE in sheep with a diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 100%. The Prionics®-CHECK PrioSTRIP SR also proved to be the first diagnostic test kit to achieve a high diagnostic sensitivity on preclinical TSE cases, detecting infection earlier during the incubation period than the other tests. “Early detection of scrapie is an important factor in disease control programs” says Ernst Zollinger, Head of Marketing and Sales at Prionics. “In contrast to BSE, scrapie is an outbreak disease. Therefore, costs associated with managing scrapie can be minimized, the earlier the spread of the infection is detected.”
The fourth EU evaluation of diagnostic tests for TSE in small ruminants was the most extensive evaluation ever, and focused on identifying new tests with excellent performance. A total of six novel test systems were evaluated. Only the new Prionics test received a favorable recommendation by EFSA to be adopted in the TSE program of the European Union
