Stimune: A Highly Effective Immunogenic Adjuvant
Stimune is a water-in-oil adjuvant, which was developed at the Animal Sciences Group (ID -Lelystad) in Lelystad, The Netherlands. The adjuvant has been extensively tested by the Animal Sciences Group and other laboratories and can be used to immunize a range of animals including birds, mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, pigs and goats. The mineral oil based emulsion is fortified with protein exposing reagents, allowing Stimune to elicit strong immune reactions.
Stimune can be applied both subcutaneously and intramuscularly.
Effective and safe
Stimune is a safe adjuvant that elicits a strong immune response, resulting in high antibody yields. Because of its efficacy, Stimune could reduce the number of animals used.
Side effects of Stimune application have been tested extensively in pigs, piglets and rabbits. Additionally, a pyrogenicity test was performed in rabbits according to the European Pharmacopoeia. The side effects following immunization are negligible. The adjuvant is non-pyrogenic and only slight degeneration of muscular tissue is sometimes observed at the immunization site.

Four parts of the water phase containing the antigen is mixed with 5 parts Stimune (v/v). See table below for the preferable dose per immunization. Stimune can be stored with the antigen at 5 ± 3°C for at least one year without loss of activity.

Stimune is a proven adjuvant that has been in use since 1985 and has been commercially available since 1996. It is a potent adjuvant, eliciting a strong immune response in B cells. Antibody yields can be more than tenfold higher than with other adjuvants. This has been shown with various antigens and in a range of animal models including parakeets and rabbits.
