African Swine Fever
African Swine Fever is caused by the African Swine Fever virus (ASFV). ASFV infects domestic pigs, warthogs and bushpigs. Transmission occurs through direct contact between healthy and sick animals, or indirect through infected feed, as well as through biological vectors (soft ticks).
The disease is endemic in the southern hemisphere of Africa, as well as on the Iberian Peninsula, and Sardinia. Sporadic outbreaks occurred in other European countries (Belgium 1985, The Netherlands1986) and outside of Europe (Caribbean, Brazil).
The clinical symptoms of ASFV are very similar to classical swine fever virus (fever, septicemia, hemorrhagic and cyanotic skin) and the two diseases normally have to be distinguished by laboratory diagnosis.
Prionics offers two highly effective ELISAs for the diagnosis of ASF in pigs. The tests are produced by Ingenasa. The Ingezim PPA COMPAC is able to detect an infection as early as 10 days p.i.
