BSE Test Procedure
To conduct a BSE test our laboratory staff require brain stem; roughly a 8 cm. long piece of the Medulla oblongata that contains the obex region. The tissue should not be fixed and does not need to be sent in a cooled container. Each sample container (see material for sample sending) must be labelled so that it is clearly assigned to the corresponding Request Form.
In the event that a test result is positive, the samples are sent to the Swiss reference laboratory. Here, a second test is carried out, and when applicable, a confirmation of BSE is issued.
Please note that clinically suspicious cases should not be sent to us. Regulations on procedures with BSE suspected cases are regulated within the Epizootic Regulation articles 176 and 177.
