Prof. Dr. med. vet. Ulrich Kihm
Prof. Kihm is the President of the company Safe Food Solutions Inc. (SAFOSO). Since 2003 this company has offered consulting and capacity building services for the safety of animal-derived food products. Prof. Kihm joined the Prionics Board of Directors in May, 2011.
Prof. Kihm brings to the Prionics Board expertise derived from his wide diversity of professional skills and his profound knowledge of infectious diseases and zoonoses, combined with his more than twenty years of experience in the field of animal health at the international level. Before founding SAFOSO, Prof. Kihm was the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) for Switzerland from 1993 until 2003. As CVO he was involved in controlling outbreaks of BSE and other important animal diseases; for example, Salmonella. Prior to this he was Director of the Institute for Virology and Immunoprophylaxis (IVI) in Basel and later in Mittelhäusern, Switzerland.
Prof. Kihm has participated in several expert groups of the OIE1 and the FAO2. In 1996 he received the gold award for extraordinary achievements by the OIE. In addition, he has been a professor for the control of animal Epizootics at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Berne, Switzerland, since 1986. In 2008 he received the Dr.h.c. of the University of Zurich for his outstanding contributions to control BSE.
